An Access Point Name (APN), is a type of identifier that allows a mobile network operator to define which network a connected device is trying to access before making a data connection to it. Additionally, an APN can provide information on the operator’s domain network and where it is located. APNs are used by carriers to control the data connection types, security certificates and IP addresses used by the connecting device. In very simple terms, APNs allow a device to hop from its cellular network to a private one or the public Internet.

A private Access Point Name allows the mobile device to enter an IP network but with added security and control for IoT applications.

What are private APNs used for?

Private APNs assign dedicated IP addresses to IoT applications, enabling secure access to both the internet and internal corporate networks. By managing authentication and security protocols directly on the IoT SIM card, a private APN establishes a secure data route—including encrypted VPN tunnels—to any required network destinations. With Private APNs:

External corporate infrastructure is isolated from the public internet and exposed solely to provisioned devices.

Network-level access controls prevent low-level malware, including rootkits, from bypassing the APN framework.

Device activity is centralized, making it significantly easier for corporate monitoring services to detect and flag anomalies.

Velos IoT Private APN benefits

Security – A private Access Point Name (APN) is the preferred connectivity solution for IoT devices due to its superior security architecture, which ensures that organizational data remains entirely within the customer’s private network. Unlike typical VPN solutions that transmit data over the vulnerable public internet, a private APN utilizes a secure mobile VPN (IPsec) to isolate traffic, offering a significantly higher level of protection.

Configurability – Private APNs offer customers the ability to configure various settings such as IP address ranges, static or dynamic addressing, and authentication techniques.

Cost-Effectiveness – Private APNs offer a highly cost-effective mobile VPN solution. By forcing mobile users to conform to corporate security and usage policies, this architecture effectively limits data abuse and controls operational costs. Furthermore, its robust VPN capabilities allow organizations to replace expensive leased lines and fixed-line systems entirely.

Global Coverage – Backed by over 700 global roaming agreements, Velos IoT’s open roaming data SIMs provide built-in network redundancy to eliminate single points of failure. With multiple carrier networks available across all major geographic regions, our Private APN solution ensures your devices maintain a continuous, highly secure connection. For enterprise applications, this translates to seamless, compliant access to organizational data and infrastructure from virtually anywhere in the world. Check out our coverage here.

Complementary products – Velos IoT offer extensive products to complement the private IoT APN solution. These include Fixed IP SIM cards, Fixed Public IP SIMs, Fixed Private IP SIMs and VPN IP Sec 3DES.

Design Support – We have dedicated solutions specialists who collaborate closely with customers to architect, advise on, and deploy comprehensive, end-to-end solution designs tailored to your specific deployment needs.

What are the benefits of a Fixed Private IP SIM card?
While ordinary mobile SIMs are built for one-way outbound data, an IoT SIM card with a Fixed IP opens up a continuous, two-way channel. This ensures your devices aren’t just sending data to the cloud, but are always reachable for real-time remote access, troubleshooting, and control. Static VS Dynamic IP…
